Why would you go into the woods? To sell the cow, to visit mother, to see the king, to lift the spell... Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine's dazzling fairy-tale musical returns to London in a stunning new production at the Bridge Theatre. With Kate Fleetwood as the Witch and Jamie Parker as the Baker, this 'five-star triumph' (The Times) takes us beyond happily ever after.
Into the Woods weaves together the tales of Cinderella, Jack and the Beanstalk, Little Red Riding Hood, and Rapunzel through the story of a Baker and his Wife desperate to have a child. A witch has cursed their family, and the only way to break the spell is to gather four items from the fairy tales. Act One ends 'happily ever after' – but Act Two explores what happens next.
Into the Woods uses fairy tales, but it's really for adults. The second act explores darker themes including death, betrayal, and moral complexity. The music and lyrics are sophisticated and emotionally rich. It's suitable for older children who can handle mature themes, but it's not a traditional family show.
Sondheim's score is one of his most beloved. Highlights include 'Children Will Listen', 'No One Is Alone', 'Giants in the Sky', 'Agony' (a hilarious duet for two princes), 'Last Midnight', and 'Into the Woods'. Every song advances the story while exploring deep emotional truths.
This is the first major London production since 2016. Previous London productions include Richard Jones' 1990 staging at the Phoenix Theatre, John Crowley's 1998 Donmar production, and Timothy Sheader's 2010 Regent's Park Open Air Theatre production. The show has never been more relevant.
The Bridge Theatre is a flexible 900-seat venue that can be configured differently for each production. The immersive staging makes the Stalls particularly exciting, while the Gallery offers an excellent overview of the action.
Cancellation policy: theatre tickets cannot be cancelled, exchanged, or refunded once purchased.
Kate Fleetwood plays the Witch, with Jamie Parker as the Baker and Katie Brayben as the Baker's Wife. The cast includes Chumisa Dornford-May (Cinderella), Bella Brown (Rapunzel), Jo Foster (Jack), Gracie McGonigal (Little Red Riding Hood), Oliver Savile (Cinderella's Prince/Wolf), Rhys Whitfield (Rapunzel's Prince), Julie Jupp (Jack's Mother), and Michael Gould (Narrator/Mysterious Man).
Into the Woods features music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and book by James Lapine – their second collaboration after Sunday in the Park with George. This production is directed by Jordan Fein (Olivier Award-winning Fiddler on the Roof), with set and costumes by Tom Scutt (Cabaret), music supervision by Mark Aspinall, and orchestrations by Jonathan Tunick.
Into the Woods won three Tony Awards at its 1988 Broadway premiere, including Best Score for Sondheim and Best Book for Lapine. It has become one of Sondheim's most beloved and frequently performed works, a staple of professional theatres and schools worldwide. This Bridge Theatre production opened to five-star reviews from The Times, Time Out, and Financial Times.
