From the creators of South Park comes the West End's most outrageously hilarious musical. The Book of Mormon follows two mismatched Mormon missionaries sent to Uganda, where their faith is put to the test in ways they never expected. Winner of nine Tony Awards and four Olivier Awards, this irreverent comedy is now the 12th longest-running musical in West End history.
The Book of Mormon, from the creators of South Park, follows two young Mormon missionaries sent to a remote village in Uganda. Elder Price is the golden boy with big ambitions; Elder Cunningham is the enthusiastic but unreliable sidekick. When they discover that the villagers have far more pressing concerns than religious conversion, their faith is tested in ways their training never prepared them for. The result is the most irreverent, outrageous, and surprisingly warm musical of the 21st century.
It is, quite simply, the funniest show in the West End. Trey Parker, Matt Stone, and Robert Lopez have created a musical that is simultaneously a loving tribute to and a ruthless parody of musical theatre itself. The songs are brilliantly crafted (Hello! could be a genuine inspirational number if it were not so hilariously deployed), the comedy pushes every boundary imaginable, and the underlying message about the power of stories and belief is genuinely thoughtful. Nine Tony Awards do not lie.
The Book of Mormon plays in the West End. Check current listings for venue and performance schedule. The show contains extremely strong language, blasphemy, and offensive humour that is integral to its comedy. It is strictly for adults. The running time is approximately two hours and thirty minutes including an interval. If you are easily offended, this is not the show for you. If you are not, it may be the best night you have ever had in a theatre.
For more irreverent comedy, The Play That Goes Wrong delivers gentler but equally hilarious theatrical chaos. The Rocky Horror Show offers similar boundary-pushing entertainment. Six reinvents history with similar pop-musical energy.
