Discover the untold story of the Witches of Oz at the Apollo Victoria Theatre. This multi-award-winning musical reveals what happened before Dorothy arrived, exploring the unlikely friendship between Elphaba and Glinda. Now in its 20th year, Wicked features spectacular staging and unforgettable songs including 'Defying Gravity'.
Based on Gregory Maguire's acclaimed novel, Wicked imagines the untold story behind The Wizard of Oz. Long before Dorothy arrives, two young women meet at Shiz University: Galinda, a popular and ambitious blonde, and Elphaba, a misunderstood green-skinned girl with extraordinary powers. Their unlikely friendship will change both their lives forever, as one is destined to become Glinda the Good and the other the Wicked Witch of the West. But is the Wicked Witch really as wicked as we've been told?
Wicked opened at the Apollo Victoria Theatre in September 2006 and is now in its 20th triumphant year. The show celebrated its 7,000th London performance in November 2024. With over 13 million people having seen it in London alone, Wicked is the 9th longest-running production in West End history.
Stephen Schwartz's magnificent score includes the show-stopping 'Defying Gravity', the beautiful friendship anthem 'For Good', the hilarious 'Popular', 'The Wizard and I', 'Dancing Through Life', and the powerful 'No Good Deed'. The music earned a Grammy Award and continues to captivate audiences with its emotional depth and theatrical brilliance.
The stage production offers theatrical magic that cannot be replicated on film. Watching Elphaba literally fly above your head during 'Defying Gravity' at the Apollo Victoria Theatre is a breathtaking experience unique to live performance. The film starring Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande (released 2024-2025) introduced millions to the story, but the stage show remains the definitive Wicked experience.
For the full impact of 'Defying Gravity', when Elphaba flies above the stage, the Stalls and Dress Circle offer the best perspectives. Central seats provide optimal views of the show's spectacular scenic effects, including the giant mechanical dragon that presides over the stage. The Apollo Victoria Theatre is a large venue, so consider seats closer to the stage if seeing facial expressions is important to you.
Both are spectacular West End musicals, but they offer different experiences. The Phantom of the Opera is a gothic romance with a classical score, while Wicked is a contemporary fantasy with pop-influenced music. Phantom appeals to fans of classic musical theatre, while Wicked often resonates with those who love stories about female friendship and empowerment.
