What is East is East about?
Ayub Khan-Din's semi-autobiographical comedy-drama is set in 1970s Salford and follows the mixed-heritage Khan family. George Khan, a Pakistani chip shop owner, is determined to maintain traditional Pakistani values in his family, while his English wife Ella and their seven children increasingly resist his authority. The play explores the tensions between cultures, generations, and identities with warmth, humour, and unflinching honesty, building to a powerful and moving conclusion.
Why see East is East?
East is East is one of the most important British plays of the last thirty years, and its exploration of multicultural identity, family loyalty, and the immigrant experience feels more relevant than ever. The play is genuinely funny, often hilarious, but it never shies away from the pain and conflict at its heart. London productions consistently deliver powerful ensemble performances, and the play's mix of comedy and drama makes it accessible to audiences who might not normally attend the theatre.
Practical information for visitors
East is East is periodically revived in London. Check current listings for the latest production and venue. The play contains strong language and deals with themes including domestic violence and cultural conflict. It is best suited for older teenagers and adults. Running time is approximately two hours and fifteen minutes.
