New Wimbledon Theatre

Situated on The Broadway in Wimbledon, London, the New Wimbledon Theatre was built by the entrepreneur and theatre lover J B Mulholland. Designed by Cecil Aubrey Massey and Roy Young, the Grade II listed Edwardian Theatre might be the only theatre to have included a Victorian-style Turkish bath in the basement. The New Wimbledon Theatre opened on 26 December 1910 with Jack and Jill, a traditional pantomime. The theatre most famously was home to the World Premieres of Lionel Bart’s Oliver! which then transferred to the Albery (now the Noel Coward) Theatre and Tommy Steele in Half A Sixpence prior to its West End transfer. In January 2017, the first production of the Burt Bacharach / Hal David / Neil Simon Broadway musical Promises, Promises, the Tony-nominated and Grammy award-winning will be presented at Southwark Playhouse. Based on Billy Wilder’s film The Apartment, Promises, Promises tells the story of Chuck Baxter, a junior executive at a New York insurance company, where his mid-town residence makes him popular with the executives bosses – who promise him a promotion in order to “entertain” at his apartment. It has to be said: Marianne Benedict as Grizabella gives the best rendition of the infamous show tune that I have ever heard; with the climactic crescendo, her pipes burst with such raw integrity and the uninterrupted audience applause (which will undoubtedly be repeated at each performance) is whole-heartedly deserved.
