Gareth Snook is to play legendary chocolatier Willy Wonka in the Charlie and the Chocolate Factory UK Tour.
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory the musical is a brand new theatre adaptation of Roald Dahl’s renown children’s story.
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory the musical is based on Roald Dahl’s children’s novel of the same name. The musical has a book by David Grieg, with music by Marc Shaiman and lyrics by March Shaiman and Scott Wittman.
This new musical adaptation premiered at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane in London under the direction of Sam Mendes. It opened in June 2013 running for 3 year and 7 months, winning two Olivier Awards for Best Costume Design and Best Lighting Design.
After some re-working the show opened on Broadway at the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre in April 2017 and ran for nine months.
Whilst use of songs from the film musical Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory are not on the whole in the stage version, the London and Broadway production utilised different songs from the film whilst maintaining a predominantly new score by Shaiman and Wittman.
In late 2022, a new UK and Ireland tour will commence at the Leeds Playhouse before visiting theatres near you.

Audiences were presented with a theatrical extravaganza, but what really struck me was the fabulous score which used only one song from the Gene Wilder film. Shaiman and Wittman had pulled off the near impossible by channelling the Wonka zeitgeist, creating new music for Charlie of the same calibre and Bricusse and Newley’s original film score. Producers of the hit musical Charlie And The Chocolate Factory have announced that the production will close during it’s fourth year in London’s West End. The official closing date has yet to be announced. Roald Dahl has been breaking box office records at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane, where it has been seen by 1.8 million people since it’s opening in 2013. It currently ranks in the top three longest-running shows at the venue alongside 42nd Street and Miss Saigon. A Broadway production will open in the 2016-17 season and tickets for a UK tour will go on sale next year.
