Frozen the musical has music and lyrics by Kristen Anderson-Lopez and a book by Jennifer Lee and is based on Disney’s 2013 animated film of the same name which is turn is derived from The Snow Queen by Hans Christian Anderson.
The story centers on the relationship between two sisters who are princesses, Elsa and Anna. Elsa has magical powers to freeze objects and people, which she does not know how to control. After inheriting the throne, Elsa flees, inadvertently causes the kingdom to become frozen in an eternal winter, and nearly kills her sister. She must sacrifice and show true love to save the day.
In September 2016, Disney announced Michael Grandage would direct Frozen on Broadway with a tryout in Denver.
Frozen the musical opened on Broadway 22 February 2018. The production played 825 performances and 26 previews at the St. James Theatre, ending on March 11, 2020, when performances were suspended due to the pandemic. In May 2020, Disney announced that the show would not re-open when on Broadway following the pandemic.
After pandemic delays and a multi-million pound venue restoration, Frozen tickets London went on sale, with the production starting previews on 27 August 2021. The musical opened at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane on 8 September 2021 starring Samantha Barks (Elsa), Stephanie McKeon (Anna), Obioma Ugoala (Kristoff), Oliver Ormson (Hans) and Craig Gallivan (Olaf).
Frozen the musical won Outstanding Puppet Design at the 2018 Drama Desk Awards.
