History

Originally titled the London Coliseum Theatre of Varieties when it opened on 24 December 1904, its inaugural performance was a variety bill. W. S. Gilbert’s final play; The Hooligan was performed in 1911 and on 8 April 1931, the musical comedy White Horse Inn began a run of 651 performances. During the Second World War, it was a canteen for works of the Air Raid Patrol, and Winston Churchill gave a speech from the stage.

From 1961, the theatre began showing movies. This would last seven years, ending with the arrival of the Saddler’s Wells Opera Company. In 1974, the company changed their name to the English National Opera. They would finally purchase the freehold of the building in 1992. An extensive and detailed restoration began in 2000 with the theatre finally re-opening in 2004.

The Theatre houses the widest proscenium arch in London, including an 80-foot wide stage, and one was of the first theatre to have electric lighting. It was also constructed with a revolving stage, though this was rarely used.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ London Coliseum – The Nutcracker (New Year Performance) 🎄🩰✨ Simply the best ballet we have ever seen. Watching The Nutcracker at the London Coliseum on New Year’s Eve was pure magic. 💫 From the very first scene, the orchestra, the costumes, and the stage design transported us into another world. The dancers were elegant, powerful, and precise – every movement felt effortless and full of emotion. 🎶💃 The Christmas atmosphere combined with the excitement of New Year’s Eve made it even more special. The Snow Scene and the Land of Sweets were absolutely breathtaking. ❄️🍭✨ The Coliseum itself is a beautiful theatre – grand, historic, and perfectly organised. Everything ran smoothly, and the energy in the audience was electric. A magical evening, unforgettable for our family. A true celebration of art, music, and the start of a new year. 🌟 #LondonColiseum #TheNutcracker #BalletMagic #NewYearsEve #FamilyMemories

My husband and I went to see the Akram Khan’s Giselle, a highly acclaimed contemporary ballet performance in London Coliseum which was its last stage show. The theatre is only a few minutes walk away from Leicester Square station. We booked our tickets in advance as the show sells out quickly. The ballet is choreographed by British dancer Akram Khan and performed by the English National Ballet. It’s a bold, contemporary re-imagining of the classic 19th-century ballet Giselle, reshaping the story of love, betrayal, death, and forgiveness for today’s world. We were mesmerised by the beautiful performance and music. Instead of villagers and nobles, Khan’s version focuses on migrant workers and exploitative landlords in a harsh industrial setting, with powerful themes about inequality, marginalisation and compassion. The movement blends classical ballet, contemporary dance, and elements of kathak (a North Indian dance form), creating a unique and visceral physical style. The design and atmosphere are striking: stark industrial sets, haunting lighting, and a new score adapted from the original make it feel more like a dramatic dance-theatre experience than a traditional ballet. We enjoyed every minute. It is worth watching if you like Contemporary dance or modern takes on classics, Ballet with strong dramatic storytelling, Theatre with social themes and emotional depth and Visually striking, intense performances. It’s a piece that’s moved audiences emotionally and critically and stands as one of the most talked-about dance productions of recent years.

A Dream amongst dreams, architecturely and historically its incredible. Its like walking through narnias wardrobe. We visited to watch Nutcracker and fortunate enough to have middle front row seats. It was perfect to see everything close up and next to the orchestra to hear the splendour of music. I welcome anyone to go and visit here especially for Nutcracker but any performances will be magical. Also a big thankyou to the hard working staff who make this experience more special.

Saw the nutcracker here and the performance was spectacular. Touches of whimsy and humor made it original but still classical. The venue is beautiful. Cocktail menu to match the theme was fun, with sugar plum and cinnamon brandy drinks, etc. A really nice evening out.
