The stage prequel to the popular TV series, Stranger Things: The First Shadow, has once again extended its West End run, confirming its status as a standout theatrical event. Set in 1959, this production explores the early days of familiar characters from the series, including a young Jim Hopper and Joyce Maldonado, and delves into the mysteries of Hawkins, Indiana.
Crafted by Stranger Things creators the Duffer Brothers, alongside Jack Thorne and Kate Trefry, the play is penned by Trefry with direction by Stephen Daldry and co-direction by Justin Martin. The production has been met with rave reviews for its immersive storytelling and visual spectacle.
The current cast features Louis Healy as Henry Creel, Callum Maxwell as Bob Newby, and Miranda Mufema as Patty Newby, with seasoned actors like Luke Mullins and Shane Attwooll also delivering compelling performances. The cast’s chemistry and the narrative’s depth offer audiences a rich, theatrical exploration of the Stranger Things universe.
The show’s technical achievements, including scenic design by Miriam Buether, costume design by Brigitte Reiss-Enstuel, and innovative illusions by Jamie Harrison and Chris Fisher, contribute significantly to its success. DJ Walde’s original music and Coral Messam’s choreography further enhance the dynamic storytelling, making Stranger Things: The First Shadow a must-see production.
Having garnered numerous awards and nominations, including a WhatsOnStage Award for Best New Play and multiple Olivier Award nominations, the play's extension reflects its critical and commercial success. It has established itself as a critical darling with the ability to expand the Stranger Things lore while captivating audiences with its theatricality and high-calibre performances.
As anticipation builds for its forthcoming Broadway transfer, Stranger Things: The First Shadow continues to attract both fans of the original series and new theatre-goers, promising them a chance to experience the mysteries of Hawkins in an entirely new yet familiar setting.
