I Lucille Lortel Awards 2020, che celebrano le produzioni Off-Broadway, sono stati annunciati il 3 maggio 2020. I riconoscimenti della stagione abbreviata 2019-20 hanno visto come conduttore Mario Cantone (in collegamento dal suo appartamento a New York), con i proventi devoluti all’Actors Fund e alle sue iniziative a sostegno di chi è stato colpito dalla crisi da COVID-19. Quest’anno i premi hanno messo in luce un panorama di 101 produzioni ammissibili (55 testi, 19 musical e 19 revival); 41 spettacoli hanno ottenuto candidature, per un totale di 95 nomination. A guidare l’albo d’oro della serata, con tre vittorie ciascuno, sono stati la produzione del Signature Theatre del musical Octet di Dave Malloy e la produzione di Playwrights Horizons del testo Heroes of the Fourth Turning di Will Arbery—entrambe prime mondiali—che si sono aggiudicate rispettivamente il premio per il miglior musical e per il miglior testo. La produzione di Playwrights di A Strange Loop di Michael R. Jackson, la produzione del Vineyard di Dana H. di Lucas Hnath e il revival del Public Theater di for colored girls who have considered suicide/when the rainbow is enuf di Ntozake Shange hanno vinto due premi ciascuno. Una cerimonia davvero senza precedenti: gli altri ospiti e presentatori hanno partecipato dalle rispettive sedi di isolamento.
