Aldwych Theatre

Aldwych Theatre slog upp portarna 1905 som en tvillingteater till det som idag är Novello Theatre, och de första åren präglades av en rad populära musikalkomedier. År 1909 blev teatern platsen för den allra första engelska uppsättningen av Anton Tjechovs Körsbärsträdgården. Mellan 1925 och 1933 producerade Ben Travers en serie farser här – numera kända som ”The Aldwych Farces” – som blev enorma succéer. Föreställningarna var så populära att turnerande sällskap fick skickas ut över landet, och majoriteten av pjäserna filmatiserades med så många som möjligt från originalensemblen i rollerna. Under mitten och slutet av 1900-talet stod teatern värd för flera ikoniska ögonblick i scenkonsthistorien. 1949 regisserade Laurence Olivier Linje Lusta med Vivien Leigh i huvudrollen (en roll hon tre år senare vann en Oscar för i filmversionen), och under 1960-talet ägde världspremiärerna av Harold Pinters Hemkomsten och The Collection rum här. Den 15 december 1960 blev Aldwych Theatre hemmascen i London för Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC). Trots att det initialt sades att de skulle stanna i tre år, blev de kvar i hela 21 år innan flytten gick till Barbican Arts Centre 1982. Bland de otaliga hyllade produktionerna från denna era märks The Wars of the Roses, The Greeks och David Edgars åtta och en halv timme långa dramatisering av Nicholas Nickleby. När RSC lämnade lokalerna såldes teatern till Nederlander Organisation. Under senare år har teatern huserat en mängd stora musikaler, däribland Whistle Down the Wind, Fame, Dirty Dancing, Top Hat och Andrew Lloyd Webbers kortlivade musikal Stephen Ward. Sedan dess har scenen gästats av de enormt framgångsrika uppsättningarna Wolf Hall / Bring Up The Bodies samt Burn The Floor. The Aldwych Theatre opened in 1905 as a companion to what is now known as the Novello Theatre, and spent its first few years hosting a number of musical comedies. In 1909, it presented the first English performance of Anton Chekov’s The Cherry Orchard. Between 1925 and 1933, Ben Travers produced a series of farces for the theatre, now known as ‘The Aldwych Farces’, which proved wildly popular. Touring companies had to be sent out to present them, and the majority of the plays were adapted for film, with as many of the original stage cast as possible. In the mid to late 20th Century, the theatre would play host to some truly iconic theatrical performances. In 1949, Laurence Olivier directed a production of A Streetcar Named Desire, which starred Vivian Leigh (who would go on to win an Oscar for the same role in the film adaptation 3 years later), and throughout the 1960s saw world premieres of The Homecoming and The Collection, written by Harold Pinter. On 15 December 1960, the Royal Shakespeare Company made the Aldwych its London base. While it announced the RSC would remain there for 3 years, they ended up staying for 21, before moving to the Barbican Arts Centre in 1982.
