Venue info

Mezi nejslavnější inscenace této éry patřily The Wars of the Roses, The Greeks a osmipůlhodinová adaptace Nicholase Nicklebyho od Davida Edgara. Po odchodu RSC zakoupila divadlo společnost Nederlander Organisation. V posledních letech se scéna zaměřila na muzikály, včetně titulů jako Whistle Down the Wind, Fame, Dirty Dancing, Top Hat nebo krátce uváděný muzikál Andrewa Lloyda Webbera Stephen Ward. Od té doby divadlo hostilo mimořádně úspěšné tituly Wolf Hall / Bring Up The Bodies a taneční show Burn The Floor. V roce 2015 zde zahájí provoz muzikál Beautiful – The Carole King Musical. History

The Aldwych Theatre opened in 1905 as a companion to what is now known as the Novello Theatre, and spent its first few years hosting a number of musical comedies. In 1909, it presented the first English performance of Anton Chekov’s The Cherry Orchard. Between 1925 and 1933, Ben Travers produced a series of farces for the theatre, now known as ‘The Aldwych Farces’, which proved wildly popular. Touring companies had to be sent out to present them, and the majority of the plays were adapted for film, with as many of the original stage cast as possible. In the mid to late 20th Century, the theatre would play host to some truly iconic theatrical performances. In 1949, Laurence Olivier directed a production of A Streetcar Named Desire, which starred Vivian Leigh (who would go on to win an Oscar for the same role in the film adaptation 3 years later), and throughout the 1960s saw world premieres of The Homecoming and The Collection, written by Harold Pinter. On 15 December 1960, the Royal Shakespeare Company made the Aldwych its London base. While it announced the RSC would remain there for 3 years, they ended up staying for 21, before moving to the Barbican Arts Centre in 1982. Famous productions out of the numerous that ran during this time were The Wars of the Roses, The Greeks, and David Edgar’s 8-and-a-half hour adaptation of Nicholas Nickleby. When the RSC left, the theatre was sold to Nederlander Organisation. In recent years, the theatre has played host to a number of musicals, including Whistle Down the Wind, Fame, Dirty Dancing, Top Hat and the short-lived Andrew Lloyd Webber musical Stephen Ward. Since then the theatre has played host to the hugely successful Wolf Hall/ Bring Up The Bodies and Burn The Floor. Beautiful - The Carole King Musical will open in 2015.

Comfortable seating in a well-kept theatre with modern facilities in the small areas theatres have for toilets. Seats comfortable and spacious enough. Performance of Shadowlands involved excellent actors with an important story about people, faith and suffering with a good script that, with the acting, brought forth emotion and relevant humour. Most enjoyable.

Even from the upper levels the seats give a clear view of the full stage and the acoustics are excellent, though legroom can feel a little tight. Front-of-house staff were very kind and the space is easy to navigate. The bars on the upper floors are fairly small with a standard range of drinks and snacks at okay prices, though little room to stand. The women’s toilets in particular are quite compact and can get a bit cramped. Visited for Shadowlands, which was an excellent production.

Seeing Shadowlands at the Aldwych Theatre was an unforgettable experience. The production is beautifully staged, with performances that feel deeply authentic and emotionally resonant from start to finish. Hugh Bonneville delivers a remarkable portrayal of C.S. Lewis, bringing warmth, intelligence, and vulnerability to the role, while Maggie Siff provides a moving and nuanced counterpart that perfectly balances the story. The play unfolds with a gentle rhythm that allows the audience to truly connect with the characters and their journey. As the narrative progresses, the emotional depth becomes incredibly powerful — at several moments the theatre was completely silent, with everyone visibly absorbed in the story. The final scenes were especially moving, incredibly emotional, and left a lasting impression long after the curtain fell. A thoughtful, beautifully acted production that explores love, loss, and faith with sensitivity and grace. Highly recommended for anyone looking for a meaningful and memorable evening in the theatre.

We went here to go watch Elf the Musical on Tuesday evening. The play was really good and the venue was also gorgeous on the inside. I must admit at that the incline of the ceiling is quite steep - we only see half the screen, but could see all actors. So, if booking seats on a tier, and towards the back, do keep this in mind.
