The Tony Awards 2022 were held last night and saw the ceremony return to Radio City Music Hall with British creatives taking out some of the prestigious awards.

The Tony Awards 2022 were hosted by Oscar winner Ariana DeBose, but the night belonged to West End transfers of the musical Company by Stephen Sondheim and George Furth and The Lehman Trilogy which had acclaimed seasons at both the National Theatre and Piccadilly Theatre.

The Lehman Trilogy who adapted from the show from Italian novelist and playwright Stefano Massini. The Lehman Trilogy winning for Best Play, Best Director and Best Actor In A Play, along with Best Scenic Design and Best Lighting Design of a Play. Playwright Ben Power said "This play was written as a hymn to the city of New York but, like the Lehman brothers themselves, our show started thousands of miles away."

The Lehman Trilogy Broadway The Broadway transfer of Marianne Elliot's gender-revised production of Company which originated at the Gielgud Theatre in London's West End won for Best Revival of a Musical. Broadway legend Patti LuPone who won the Olivier Award for her portrayal of Joanne in Company triumphed again when she won for Best Featured Actress in a musical. Matt Doyle won for Best Featured Actor in a musical and Bunny Christie won for Best Scenic Design of a Musical. Pulitzer Prize-winning musical A Strange Loop was named Best Musical having received 11 nominations, including one for L Morgan Lee - the first openly transgender actor to receive a Tony nomination for Best Actress in a Musical. The show which tells the story of a Black queer man writing a musical about a Black queer man, noted that the importance not just of representation but of "doing the very best work we can do".

Six’s costume designer Gabriella Slade also won in her category.

Angela Lansbury received a Lifetime Achievement Award for her long career on the stage. The 96 year old previously won five Tony Awards, but was unable to attend the ceremony.

Attendees this year who were sitting in the orchestra section were not required to wear masks but PCR testing was mandatory. Those sitting further from the stage had to remain masked for the duration.
