공연장 이용 안내와 티켓 예매 팁도 확인해 보세요. 빅토리아 팰리스 극장은 1832년에 지어진 로열 스탠더드 호텔 위층의 작은 콘서트룸에서 시작됐습니다. 1850년 건물이 확장되면서 이 공간은 ‘모이의 뮤직 홀(Moy’s Music Hall)’로 바뀌었지만

이 이름은 오래가지 않았고 1863년에는 ‘로열 스탠더드 뮤직 홀(Royal Standard Music Hall)’로 불렸습니다. 이후 이 건물은 1886년과 1910년 두 차례 철거 후 재건됐고

새 이름인 ‘빅토리아 팰리스(The Victoria Palace)’로 버라이어티 쇼와 르뷰를 선보였습니다. 뮤직 홀이라는 뿌리 때문에

극장이 보다 성숙한 작품으로 방향을 틀려 했을 때 반응은 엇갈렸습니다. 예를 들어 애국극 ‘Young England’는 평단에서 혹평을 받았지만

오히려 컬트적인 인기를 끌기도 했습니다. 이후 르뷰로의 회귀가 더 수익성이 좋았고

‘Me and My Girl’(1937)

코미디 르뷰 시리즈인 ‘The Crazy Ones’(1947~1962)

그리고 ‘Black and White Minstrel Show’(1960년대부터 1972년까지 공연) 같은 작품들이 무대에 올랐습니다. 뮤지컬 또한 극장의 흥행을 이끌었는데

‘The Buddy Holly Story’는 무려 13년 동안 장기 공연을 이어가다가 1995년 스트랜드 극장(Strand Theatre)으로 옮겨갔습니다. 이 흐름은 21세기에도 계속돼

The Victoria Palace Theatre began as a small concert room above the Royal Standard Hotel (built 1832). In 1850

the building was expanded and the room became Moy’s Music Hall. This moniker didn’t last long

and by 1863 it was called the Royal Standard Music Hall. The building saw subsequently demolished and rebuilt twice (1886 and 1910)

with the new name of The Victoria Palace

presenting varieties and revues. The music hall roots of the venue led to a mixed response when the theatre attempted to move towards a more mature output. For example

a patriotic play called Young England was so poorly received critically that it became a cult hit. A return to revue proved more profitable

with productions such as Me and My Girl (1937)

The Crazy Ones (a series of comedy revues 1947-1962)

and the Black and White Minstrel Show (which played through the 1960s to 1972). Musicals also proved to be successful for the theatre

with The Buddy Holly Story running for 13 years (transferring to the Strand Theatre in 1995). This trend has continued into the 21st Century

with Fame

Grease

and the premiere of Billy Elliot.
