ヴィクトリア・パレス・シアターはロンドンの劇場で、British Theatreでも紹介しています。ご来場前に、今後の公演情報、会場利用の実用ガイド、チケット予約のポイントをご確認ください。 ヴィクトリア・パレス・シアターの始まりは、ロイヤル・スタンダード・ホテル（1832年建設）の上階にあった小さなコンサート・ルームでした。1850年に建物が増築され、この部屋は「モイのミュージック・ホール（Moy’s Music Hall）」として知られるようになります。ただこの呼び名は長続きせず、1863年までには「ロイヤル・スタンダード・ミュージック・ホール（Royal Standard Music Hall）」へ。建物はその後、2度にわたって取り壊しと再建が行われ（1886年、1910年）、新たに「ザ・ヴィクトリア・パレス」として、ヴァラエティやレヴューを上演する劇場となりました。 ミュージック・ホールをルーツに持つこの会場が、より“大人向け”の作品へ舵を切ろうとした際には、評価が割れることもありました。たとえば愛国的な戯曲『ヤング・イングランド（Young England）』は批評家から酷評され、逆にカルト的人気を得る結果となりました。 一方でレヴュー路線への回帰は採算面で奏功し、『ミー・アンド・マイ・ガール（Me and My Girl）』（1937年）、『ザ・クレイジー・ワンズ（The Crazy Ones）』（1947〜1962年にかけて続いたコメディ・レヴュー・シリーズ）、そして『ブラック・アンド・ホワイト・ミンストレル・ショー（Black and White Minstrel Show）』（1960年代から1972年まで上演）といった作品がヒットを記録しました。さらにミュージカルも劇場の看板となり、『バディ・ホリー・ストーリー（The Buddy Holly Story）』は13年間のロングランを達成（1995年にストランド・シアターへ移転）。 この流れは21世紀に入っても続き、『フェイム（Fame）』『グリース（Grease）』に加え、『ビリー・エリオット（Billy Elliot）』の初演もここで迎えています。 ビリー・エリオット （2005年5月11日～2016年4月8日）トゥナイト・イズ・ザ・ナイト（2003年11月7日～2004年10月9日）グリース（2002年10月2日～2003年9月6日）キス・ミー・ケイト（2001年8月30日～2002年8月24日）フェーム ― ザ・ミュージカル（2000年10月3日～2001年9月8日） 7

The Victoria Palace Theatre began as a small concert room above the Royal Standard Hotel (built 1832). In 1850

the building was expanded and the room became Moy’s Music Hall. This moniker didn’t last long

and by 1863 it was called the Royal Standard Music Hall. The building saw subsequently demolished and rebuilt twice (1886 and 1910)

with the new name of The Victoria Palace

presenting varieties and revues. The music hall roots of the venue led to a mixed response when the theatre attempted to move towards a more mature output. For example

a patriotic play called Young England was so poorly received critically that it became a cult hit. A return to revue proved more profitable

with productions such as Me and My Girl (1937)

The Crazy Ones (a series of comedy revues 1947-1962)

and the Black and White Minstrel Show (which played through the 1960s to 1972). Musicals also proved to be successful for the theatre

with The Buddy Holly Story running for 13 years (transferring to the Strand Theatre in 1995). This trend has continued into the 21st Century

with Fame

and the premiere of Billy Elliot.
