Sir Henry Irving (1838-1905) was the greatest actor of the Victorian age and the first actor to be knighted. He was also a celebrated theatre manager at the Lyceum Theatre.
Dame Ellen Terry (1847-1928) was the most acclaimed actress of her era and Irving's leading lady at the Lyceum for over 20 years.
The title comes from a scathing Victorian review of Ellen Terry that stated 'Grace pervades the hussy' – criticising her for being an unwed mother.
