Hosted by James Corden, this year's Tony Awards saw Hadestown and The Ferryman dominate proceedings with 8 wins and four wins respectively including Best New Musical and Best New Play. The Boys In The Band won best revival of a play Oklahoma! won for best revival of a musical.

Hadestown with a score and book by Anais Mitchell and direction by Rachel Chavkin previewed at the National Theatre, London prior to its Broadway run. Mitchell is the third woman ever to win a Tony for writing music and lyrics for a Broadway musical, whilst Jessica Paz was the first woman to be nominated and win for sound design, an award she won with Nevin Steinberg her Hadestown co-sound designer.

Hadestown did not dominate all Tony Awards categories however, with Santino Fontana and Robert Horn winning for Best Performance by a Leading Actor in A Musical and Best Book Of A Musical for Tootsie, Stephanie J Block winning for Best Actress by a Leading Actress in a Musical for The Cher Show, and Serjio Trujillo of Ain't Too Proud winning for Best Choreography.

History was made when Ali Stroker became the first actor in a wheelchair to ever win a Tony Award when she won the award for Featured Actress in a Musical for her role in Oklahoma! Stoker said that she feels honored to act as a role model for others who are diabled. As an 11 year-old she yearned sor someone who looked like her on stage. “This award is for every kid who is watching tonight who has a disability, has a limitation or a challenge,” Stroker said after accepting her award.
