这次《半个六便士》为全新制作。在凭借《欢乐满人间》与《柳林风声》取得成功后，制作人卡梅隆·麦金托什邀请了获奖音乐剧创作搭档乔治·斯泰尔斯与安东尼·德鲁，并携手《唐顿庄园》主创朱利安·费罗斯，为这部深受喜爱的音乐剧注入更贴近当代的全新面貌。
《半个六便士》改编自H·G·威尔斯带有半自传性质的小说《基普斯：一个纯朴灵魂的故事》（“Kipps: The Story Of A Simple Soul”）。
卡梅隆·麦金托什曾表示，《半个六便士》的主演查理·斯坦普——刚从戏剧学院毕业不久——是一位非凡的天才，是一颗正在冉冉升起的新星。
《半个六便士》最初版本于1963年创作，专为英国流行偶像汤米·斯蒂尔量身打造。汤米·斯蒂尔可谓舞台魅力十足，他不仅主演了伦敦与百老汇版《半个六便士》，随后还在该剧的电影改编版中继续饰演基普斯一角。
