Brendan Gleeson to Make West End Debut in Haunting Irish Classic
Kate Horton Productions and Landmark Productions have announced the full cast for a new production of The Weir by Conor McPherson, who will also direct the play for the first time.
The production will star Brendan Gleeson in his West End debut as Jack, and run at the Harold Pinter Theatre from 12 September to 6 December 2025, with a press night on Friday 19 September. Prior to its London run, the show will play a three-week engagement at Dublin’s 3Olympia Theatre from 8 August to 6 September.
Acclaimed Cast Joins McPherson’s Return to a Masterpiece
Joining Gleeson are:
Owen McDonnell (Bad Sisters, Killing Eve) as Brendan
Seán McGinley (That They May Face the Rising Sun, The Brightening Air) as Jim
Kate Phillips (Peaky Blinders, Wolf Hall) as Valerie
Tom Vaughan-Lawlor (Dancing at Lughnasa, Avengers: Endgame) as Finbar
The production marks a return to McPherson’s breakout play, which first premiered at the Royal Court in 1997 and went on to win the Olivier Award for Best New Play.
McPherson said:
“It’s always exciting embarking on a new production, but to revisit The Weir in the company of these particularly accomplished artists feels like a singular privilege.”
A Chilling, Intimate Portrait of Rural Ireland
Set in a remote Irish pub on a stormy night, The Weir unfolds as four men share ghost stories to impress a newcomer, Valerie. But as the evening darkens, Valerie reveals a haunting tale of her own—changing the dynamic of the room forever.
Blending humour, folklore and pathos, The Weir is an exploration of memory, loneliness, and the human desire to connect.
Creative Team
This new production reunites McPherson with a stellar creative team:
Set & Costume Design: Rae Smith
Lighting Design: Mark Henderson
Sound Design: Kevin Gleeson
The production is presented by Kate Horton Productions and Landmark Productions. It follows Landmark’s recent London successes including Krapp’s Last Tape and Walking with Ghosts, and continues Kate Horton’s run of acclaimed West End hits including Medea, Good, and Waiting for Godot.
