What is Wolf Hall about?

Based on Hilary Mantel's Booker Prize-winning novels, Wolf Hall dramatises the rise of Thomas Cromwell from blacksmith's son to the most powerful man in England during the reign of Henry VIII. The plays follow Cromwell's extraordinary political skill as he navigates the dangerous waters of Tudor court politics, engineering Henry's break with Rome and his marriage to Anne Boleyn while ruthlessly dispatching anyone who stands in his way.

Why see Wolf Hall?

The stage adaptations of Mantel's novels have been among the most acclaimed productions of recent years. The storytelling is intelligent, nuanced, and gripping, presenting history not as costume drama but as a vivid, immediate human story about power, ambition, and survival. The ensemble work is typically outstanding, and the production design brings Tudor England to life with theatrical invention rather than historical literalism.

Practical information for visitors

Wolf Hall productions have played in the West End and at various London venues. Check current listings for the latest revival. The plays deal with complex political themes and some violence, making them best suited for older teenagers and adults. Running times vary; the original production was presented as two plays that could be seen on the same day or on separate occasions.
