Elizabeth Debicki, fresh from her acclaimed portrayal of Princess Diana in The Crown, will make her return to London theatre this summer in a bold new adaptation of Ibsen's The Master Builder alongside Tony and Olivier Award nominee Kate Fleetwood. Debicki and Fleetwood will join previously announced Ewan McGregor in My Master Builder, written by emerging playwright Lila Raicek.
Contemporary Reimagining
Raicek's adaptation transforms Ibsen's 1892 masterwork into a contemporary exploration of ambition, power, and generational conflict. The production marks the first major reimagining of the play in London for over a decade.
Star-Studded Ensemble
Debicki will take on the role of Hilde Wangel, the mysterious young woman whose arrival upends the life of ambitious architect Halvard Solness (McGregor). Fleetwood joins the cast as Aline Solness, bringing her considerable classical experience to this contemporary interpretation. David Ajala (One Night in Miami), and Mirren Mack (Grapes of Wrath, Small Island) complete the cast.
Creative Team
The production will be directed by Rebecca Frecknall, whose recent work has garnered critical acclaim across London's theatrical landscape. The creative team includes set design by Merle Hensel and lighting by Lee Curran.
Production Details
My Master Builder will begin previews at the Theatre Royal Haymarket on June 15, 2025, with an official opening night set for June 26. The limited engagement is scheduled to run through September 14.
"This adaptation speaks directly to our current moment," said playwright Raicek. "It examines the cost of ambition and the generational tensions that define our era, while honoring Ibsen's original insights into human nature."
The production marks Debicki's first stage appearance since her breakthrough role in The Crown. "Returning to theatre, especially in London, has been a long-held ambition," said Debicki. "Hilde is one of dramatic literature's most fascinating characters, and Lila's adaptation brings her startlingly into the present."
