Renowned singer and actress Beverley Knight is set to star in the UK premiere of Marie and Rosetta, opening at the Rose Theatre, Kingston in May 2025. This vibrant production celebrates the musical and spiritual collaboration between gospel singers Sister Rosetta Tharpe and Marie Knight. Knight, known for her stellar performances in West End productions such as Memphis and The Drifters Girl, will bring the legendary Rosetta Tharpe to life on stage.
The play, written by George Brant, provides a glimpse into the lives of these two influential figures in music, showcasing their journey through the gospel circuit of the 1940s and their pivotal roles in the creation of rock ‘n’ roll. Under the direction of Monique Touko, the production promises to deliver powerful performances coupled with a soul-stirring mix of gospel and blues.
Following its run at the Rose Theatre from 2 May to 24 May 2025, the show will move to the Chichester Festival Theatre from 25 June to 26 July, as part of its Festival 2025 lineup. This production not only highlights the historical impact of these musical icons but also explores themes of fame, faith, and friendship against the backdrop of a segregated America.
