What is Memphis the Musical about?
Memphis is a Tony Award-winning musical inspired by the true story of how rock 'n' roll emerged from the underground music scene of 1950s Memphis, Tennessee. The show follows Huey Calhoun, a white radio DJ with a passion for Black music, and Felicia Farrell, a club singer whose voice could change the world. Their love story unfolds against the backdrop of racial segregation, as Huey fights to bring Black music to white audiences and both characters risk everything for their art and for each other.
Why see Memphis?
Memphis won four Tony Awards including Best Musical, and the London production brought that same explosive energy to the West End. The score is outstanding, blending rock 'n' roll, R&B, and gospel into a sound that captures the birth of a cultural revolution. The choreography is electrifying, and the show's exploration of music as a force for social change resonates powerfully. If you love music history, civil rights stories, or simply great musical theatre, Memphis delivers on every level.
