Peacock Theatre

praktische informatie over de locatie en tips voor het boeken van tickets voorafgaand aan je bezoek. Op de plek van het Peacock Theatre staat al sinds de 17e eeuw een theater. In 1660 werd in Gibbon’s Tennis Court een productie van Othello opgevoerd

waarin voor het eerst een (met naam bekende) vrouw op een Londens toneel te zien was. Er zijn verder geen gegevens over toneelstukken bewaard gebleven en het gebouw ging in 1809 in vlammen op. Een nieuw theater werd in opdracht van Oscar Hammerstein I (de grootvader van Oscar Hammerstein II) gebouwd en opende in 1911 als het London Opera House. Na een reeks operaproducties — waaronder The Queen of Spades met de eerste Japanse zangeres ooit in de rol van Madame Butterfly — dwongen lage bezoekersaantallen tot verkoop aan Oswald Stoll in 1916. Hij doopte het om tot het Stoll Theatre. Tot de sluiting en sloop in 1957 deed het gebouw dienst als bioscoop en was het de thuishaven voor variété en diverse theaterstukken. Het huidige gebouw

destijds bekend als The Royalty Theatre

stamt uit 1960 en werd tot 1966 voornamelijk als bioscoop gebruikt. Op Oh! Calcutta! na kenden weinig producties succes. Het theater deed vervolgens dienst als tv-studio voor This is Your Life

totdat de London School of Economics (LSE) het pand kocht en het de naam Peacock Theatre gaf. In 1996 nam het gezelschap van Sadler’s Wells hier zijn intrek. Sinds de opening van hun eigen nieuwe theater in 1998 dient de Peacock als hun vaste podium voor dansvoorstellingen. Vandaag de dag wordt de zaal gedeeld door deze dansproducties en de LSE. Volgens sommigen wordt het theater overigens nog altijd bezocht door een spookachtige dolfijn

beter bekend als ‘Flipper’. Blam! A theatre has stood on the site of the Peacock since the 17th Century. The Gibbon’s Tennis Court hosted a production of Othello in 1660

which featured the first (identified) woman on a London stage. No other records of plays remain and the building was destroyed in a fire in 1809. A new theatre was commissioned by Oscar Hammerstein I (Oscar Hammerstein II’s grandfather) and opened in 1911 as the London Opera House. After a string of operatic productions (including a production of The Queen of Spades that featured the first Japanese singer to play Madame Butterfly)

low audience numbers led to theatre to be sold to Oswald Stoll in 1916

who renamed it the Stoll Theatre. The theatre hosted cinema screenings

variety acts

and theatrical productions until its closure and demolition in 1957. The present theatre

known then as The Royalty Theatre

was built in 1960

where it showed films until 1966. With the exception of Oh! Calcutta! few productions found success and the theatre became a TV studio for This is Your Life before its purchase by the London School of Economics (who renamed it the Peacock Theatre). The Sadler’s Wells Company moved to the theatre in 1996

and after the new Sadler’s Wells Theatre opened in 1998

the theatre become their dedicated dance venue. The venue is currently shared between these dance productions and LSE. The theatre is believed by some to be haunted by a dolphin

known as ‘Flipper’.
