London Palladium

zoals de bekende pantomime Cinderella uit 1926 – een productie waar vandaag de dag zelfs nog filmbeelden van bestaan. In de jaren dertig was de komediegroep The Crazy Gang een vaste waarde in het theater; zij waren razend populair bij zowel het grote publiek als de Britse koninklijke familie. In die periode stond de programmering onder de bezielende leiding van de bekende impresario Val Parnell. Tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog ontsnapte het theater aan een ramp toen een onontplofte parachutemijn door het dak viel. Een explosievenopruimingsdienst van de Royal Navy kwam ter plaatse en wist het gevaar tijdig te bezweren. In 1945 nam Parnell de rol van algemeen directeur op zich en gooide hij het over een andere boeg: hij gaf resoluut de voorkeur aan grote Amerikaanse sterren als headliners. Sammy Davis Jr. en Frank Sinatra op de planken. De populariteit van de Palladium-variétéshows bereikte een nieuw hoogtepunt door het ITV-programma Sunday Night at the London Palladium

dat tussen 1955 en 1967 live werd uitgezonden. In 1968 bracht het theater met Golden Boy

eveneens met Sammy Davis Jr. in de hoofdrol

zijn allereerste musical op de planken. Na een korte terugkeer naar variété in de jaren tachtig (met ITV1’s Live From the Palladium)

verschenen er steeds vaker grote musicals in de programmering

waaronder Oliver! en Saturday Night Fever. Deze koers werd voortgezet nadat de Really Useful Group het theater in 2000 overnam. Nog altijd keert het Palladium regelmatig terug naar zijn roots met concerten van wereldsterren als Elton John en als het vertrouwde decor voor de prestigieuze Royal Variety Performance

Open its opening on December 26 1910

The Palladium (as it was titled until 1934) quickly became a premier venue for variety performances

such as the 1926 pantomime Cinderella (video footage of this production remains to this day). Throughout the 1930s

the entertainment group The Crazy Gang performed at the theatre regularly

gaining widespread popularity with the general public as well as the Royal Family. During this time

bookings were manages by theatrical impresario Val Parnell. During the Second World War

the theatre suffered a bomb scare when an unexploded parachute mine fell through the roof. A Royal Navy bomb disposal team arrived on the scene and managed to render it safe. Parnell became managing director in 1945 and embarked on a radical policy of favoring famous American acts at the top of the bill. These included Judy Garland

and Frank Sinatra. The popularity of the Palladium’s variety shows would be further expanded with the ITV programme Sunday Night at the London Palladium

which was broadcast live throughout its run (1955-1967). In 1968

the theatre produced its first musical

the theatre began showing more musicals

Including Oliver! and Saturday Night Fever. When the Really Useful Group purchased the theatre in 2000

the trend continued. The theatre often returns to its roots as the host of music concerts (such as Elton John) and as a regular host of the Royal Variety Performance (as recently as 2013).
