Possibly one of the greatest entertainments every conceived, The Phantom Of the Opera is one of the highest grossing musicals of all time and has been seen by millions of people across the globe.The timeless staging of The Phantom Of The Opera has made it a firm favourite over the last 26 years in the West-End. The Phantom Of The Opera is still being performed in its original London venue, His Majesty's (formerly Her Majesty's) Theatre. The show was designed to use many of the theatres original Victorian stage mechanisms.
WHAT IS THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA ABOUT?
Based on the novel by Gaston Leroux, The Phantom Of The Opera tells the tale of a hideously deformed composer, forced to hide in the depths of the Paris Opera House. When young dancer Christine Daae arrives at the opera, he begins to tutor her under the guise of the ghost of her dead father convinced that she has the makings of a great star. All does not go to plan though, when childhood sweetheart Raoul appears as patron of the opera’s new owners.
Mayhem ensues as this timeless love triangle plays out. But does love triumph in the end?

The Phantom Of The Opera was composed by Andrew Lloyd Webber whose other shows include Joseph And The Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat, Evita, Jesus Christ Superstar, Song & Dance, Starlight Express, The Beautiful Game, Aspects Of Love, Stephen Ward and Love Never Dies - a sequel to The Phantom Of The Opera.
The lyrics for the show were written by Charles Hart and Richard Stilgoe.
FUN FACTS AND TRIVIA ABOUT THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA
It is estimated that Phantom has been seen by more than 140 million people, and the total worldwide gross is now in excess of $6 billion.The London production of The Phantom of the Opera celebrated its 25th Anniversary in October 2011 with a series of 3 performances at London’s Royal Albert Hall.The Phantom of the Opera has been produced in 151 cities, in 30 countries around the world, including Australia, Austria, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, China, Denmark, England, Germany, Holland, Hong Kong, Hungary, Ireland, Japan, Korea, Mexico, New Zealand, Scotland, Singapore, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Taiwan, Thailand and The United States.
The dazzling replica of the Paris Opera House chandelier is made up of 6,000 beads consisting of 35 beads to each string. It is three metres wide and weighs one ton. The touring version falls at two an a half metres per second. The original version was built by five people in four weeks.
The Phantom’s make-up takes two hours to put on and 30 minutes to take off. The face is moisturized, closely shaved and the prosthetics are fitted, setting immediately, before two wigs, two radio mics and two contact lenses (one white and one clouded) are placed.
Each performance has 230 costumes, 14 dressers, 120 automated cues, 22 scene changes, 281 candles and uses 250 kg of dry ice and 10 fog and smoke machines.
