The Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC) has today announced its ambitious 2025/26 season, featuring an impressive roster of talent including Game of Thrones star Rose Leslie in The Contstant Wife, acclaimed theatre veteran Simon Russell Beale in Titus Andronicus and Doctor Who alumna Freema Agyema in Much Ado About Nothing. This wide-ranging season combines classical Shakespeare productions with innovative new works and adaptations.

Star Power

The season brings together an exceptional ensemble of talent, with Simon Russell Beale returning to the RSC for the first time in several years, as well as Rose Leslie and Doctor Who alumna Freema Agyeman. This casting demonstrates the RSC's continuing ability to attract both established theatrical talents and prominent screen actors.

Programming Innovation

In a notable programming decision, the season will feature three different interpretations of Hamlet, including the UK premiere of James Ijames' Pulitzer Prize-winning Fat Ham, a contemporary adaptation of Shakespeare's classic. This highlights the company's commitment to exploring classical texts through modern perspectives.

The Full Season is comprised of Much Ado About Nothing, Hamlet Hail to the Thief, The Winter’s Tale, Measure for Measure, The BFG, Titus Andronicus, I, Peaseblossom, The Constant Wife, An Actor Convalescing in Devon, Fat Ham, 4.48 Psychosis and The Two Gentlemen of Verona with additional shows planned for tour.

New Works

Alongside traditional Shakespeare productions, the season includes several new works and adaptations. A particular highlight is a new stage adaptation of Roald Dahl's The BFG, scheduled to premiere during the Christmas season, running from November 25, 2025, to January 31, 2026.

Touring Plans

The season demonstrates a strong commitment to reaching audiences beyond Stratford-upon-Avon, with several productions scheduled for touring. This includes Rupert Goold's production of Hamlet, which will begin its journey in Truro.

Cultural Impact

This announcement represents a significant moment in British theatre, combining traditional classical productions with contemporary interpretations and new works. The season's diverse programming reflects the RSC's commitment to both preserving theatrical heritage and fostering innovation.

Industry Significance

The scale and ambition of this season announcement demonstrate the RSC's continuing role as a leader in British theatre, particularly in its approach to classical works and new adaptations. The mix of traditional and innovative programming suggests a careful balance between heritage and evolution.

Looking Forward

As preparations begin for this ambitious season, the RSC's announcement signals confidence in the future of classical theatre and its ability to speak to contemporary audiences. The combination of star power and innovative programming promises an exciting year ahead.

Artistic Vision

The season reflects the RSC's commitment to making classical theatre relevant to modern audiences while maintaining high artistic standards. The inclusion of both traditional productions and contemporary adaptations demonstrates this balanced approach.

This announcement positions the RSC at the forefront of contemporary classical theatre, promising a season that honours theatrical tradition while embracing innovation and change.
