SHOWBOAT - A GROUND-BREAKING MUSICAL
When Show Boat opened in 1927 at the Ziegfield Theatre it forever changed the history of musical theatre. For the first time ever the plot of the musical seemlessly integrated with the songs. Show Boat would take musicals from revues to intelligent dramatic works and would open the door for some of the great shows of Rodgers and Hammerstein including Oklahoma! and South Pacific.
Since that original production Show Boat has been presented, revived and revived again all around the world. Revivals of the show have received both the Olivier Award for Best Revival (1991) and the Tony Award for Best Revival Of A Musical (1005).
WHAT IS SHOWBOAT ABOUT?
Show Boat is based On Edna Ferber's novel of the same name. Show Boat is a sprawling epic chronicling the lives of the stagehands, performers and dock workers on a Mississippi River show boat called the Cotton Blossom over 40 years. It is a tale of racial prejudice and tragic enduring love.
ONE OF MUSICAL THEATRE'S GREAT SCORES
Show Boat has music by Jerome Kern and lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II. It contains some of msuical theatre's greatest musical moments with songs including O’l Man River, Make Believe and Can’t Help Lovin’ Dat Man.
THE STUNNING SHEFFIELD PRODUCTION
This production of Show Boat comes to the West End from Sheffield were it garnered 5 star reviews from press nationally. Following it's sell out season at Sheffield Theatres, Show Boat is now setting sail in London and looks certain to replicate that success all over again. For musical theatre lovers this is a production that shouldn't be missed.
SHOW BOAT RETURNS FOR THE FIRST TIME IN TWENTY YEARS
This is the first time in 20 years that a production of Show Boat has been seen in the West End. The last production being seen at the Prince Edward Theatre.
So hop on board the Cotton Blossom show boat and be swept away by one of the most romantic musicals of all time.
