As we approach the Tony Awards this year we thought we'd publish just a few interesting pieces of trivia associated with the awards. Did you know......
MOST TONY AWARDS
The play that holds the record for being awarded the most Tony Awards was Tom Stoppard's The Coast Of Utopia in 2007 which won 7 awards. The Producers still reigns as the king of musicals with 12 wins in 2011 although it came close to losing its crown in 2016 when Hamilton receieved 16 nominations. What went wrong? Hamilton was competing against itself in some categories.
South Pacific recieved 7 awards in 2008 for Best Musical Revival whilst Kiss Me Kate in 2000 was the most nominated revival with 12 nominations.
Harold Prince - The Princfe Of Broadway has recieved 21 Tony Awards during his career, including eight for producing, two as a producer andthree special Tonys. Stephen Sondheim has recieved seven Tony Awards, more than any other composer.
Iconic choreographer Bob Fosse won eight Tony Awards for choreography and direction.
Audra McDonald has won six Tony awards for performance. Not only is this more than any other individual, she also has the record for having won her awards in four different acting categories.
Frank Langella and Boyd Gaines are tied as the male performers with the most Tony Awards in acting categories.
Gwen Verdon and Angela Lansbury are tied in the musical categories with four Tony Awards each.
Tonny Tune, Trey Parker and Harvey Fierstein have each received Tony awards in four different categories.
Jules Fisher won nine Tony Awards more than any other lighting designer.
THE FIRST TONY AWARDS
The First Tony Awards were held in 1947 in the Grand Ballroom of the Waldorf Astoria.
BLESSED THEATRE
Lin-Manuel Miranda cals this theatre home and for good reason. Productions housed at the Richard Rodgers Theatre have won 11 Tony Awards for Best Musical or Best Play.
GIRL POWER
Fun Home was the first show to win Best Musical written entirely by womena- Lisa Kron, Jeanine Tesori and Alison Bechdel
GO BILLY!
David Alvarez, Kiril Kulish and Trent Kowalik are the only performers to have jointly won a Tony award for rotating a single role in Billy Elliot in 2009.
