Shakespeare's Globe Sets Romeo and Juliet in American West with New Cast

Shakespeare's Globe has announced the cast for its upcoming production of Romeo and Juliet, which will transport the classic tragedy to the American West. The production, directed by associate artistic director Sean Holmes, will run from April 25 to August 2, 2025.

Cast Announcement

Abdul Sessay and Lola Shalam will take on the iconic roles of the star-crossed lovers. The supporting ensemble features Roman Asde as Benvolio, Michael Elcock as Mercutio, and Rawaed Asde as Tybalt. Léa des Garets joins as Lady Capulet, with John Lightbody as Friar Lawrence and Jamie-Rose Monk as the Nurse.

Production Team

The creative team brings together an experienced group of theatre artists. Paul Wills leads the design, with Grant Olding as composer. Maisie Carter serves as fight director, while Tamsin Hurtado Clarke handles movement direction. The production also benefits from Si Trinder as text consultant and Liz Flint as voice coach.

Summer Season Context

The production forms part of the Globe's ambitious summer season, which includes other significant works such as The Crucible, Twelfth Night, and The Merry Wives of Windsor. Becky Paris, the Globe's head of casting, has assembled a company that promises to bring fresh perspectives to this classic text.
