The team that made sure the show could go on after the ceiling collapsed at Death of a Salesman are among nominees in The Stage Awards 2020, announced today.
Its production team reached the shortlist for Achievement in Technical Theatre for creating scratch performances of the play at London’s Young Vic in November after the Piccadilly Theatre in the West End was temporarily closed for repairs. They are nominated in the category alongside sound designers Ben and Max Ringham and the entire team of Anna at the National Theatre, where audiences listened through headphones, and Sheffield Theatres’ creative and production team for their work on Life of Pi which featured state-of-the-art video projection. Bunker Theatre at London Bridge, which has to close in March 2020 because of the redevelopment of the site, is nominated for Fringe Theatre of the Year. It is shortlisted alongside Alphabetti Theatre in Newcastle upon Tyne and Orange Tree Theatre in south-west London.
Derby Theatre, Royal Lyceum Theatre in Edinburgh and Sheffield Theatres are shortlisted for Regional Theatre of the Year while Queen’s Theatre Hornchurch, Theatre Royal Stratford East and the London Palladium are up for London Theatre of the Year.
Leeds Playhouse, which reopened in October after a £15.8million capital redevelopment, is shortlisted for Theatre Building of the Year alongside London’s new Boulevard Theatre in Soho and the new base for Mountview Academy of Theatre Arts in south-east London.
Nominees for the Innovation Award are the new immersive theatre venue Immersive LDN, diversification initiative Artistic Directors of the Future and the musical, & Juliet, which ran a marketing campaign featuring iconic pop magazine Smash Hits.
West London’s Coronet Theatre and touring production company Selladoor Worldwide are up for the International Award alongside innovative Swiss theatre director Milo Rau whose show, “La Reprise. Histoire(s) du Théâtre (I)”, was staged at Edinburgh International Festival this year.
Three leading production companies are up for Producer of the Year: ATG Productions, Fuel, and Michael Harrison Entertainment, which all have shows running in London’s West End.
An Unsung Hero award, sponsored by Get Into Theatre and with no shortlist, will also be announced at the awards ceremony.
The Stage Awards, in association with Integro Insurance Brokers, were set up to celebrate theatrical achievements in West End, regional, fringe and international theatre. The shortlist is decided by The Stage’s senior editorial team after consultation with leading figures in the theatre industry and a public nomination process.
Winners will be announced on 31 January 2020 at a ceremony at the Royal Opera House in London.
