Full casting has been announced for the revival of Peter Gill’s play Small Change at Strode Theatre in Somerset and London’s Omnibus Theatre.
Andy Rush and Toby Gordon will play two friends remembering their childhood in Cardiff in the 1950s. Their mothers will be played by Sian Ejiwunmi-Le Berre and Victoria John.
This powerful memory play, originally staged at the Royal Court in London in 1976, reveals the complex relationships between mothers and sons and the search for truth.
It is being directed by George Richmond-Scott, associate director of West End show Everybody’s Talking About Jamie and artistic director of Both Barrels Theatre.
It will run at Omnibus Theatre in Clapham from 21 April to 9 May, 2020, and then at Strode Theatre from 14 to 15 May.
The creative team also includes movement director Rachel Wise, lighting by Josh Gadsby, sound design by Lex Kosanke, and set and costumes by Liam Bunster.
Last performed in London in 2008, this poetic exploration of the human condition centres around Gerard (Andy Rush), a troubled man at the end of youth, trapped by his past. He relives his vibrant childhood in search of the moment that defined him.
Small Change will be Richmond-Scott’s second play at Omnibus Theatre after his double Offie Award-nominated adaptation of Lorca’s Blood Wedding. He said of Gill’s work: “I was drawn to his incredibly vivid, lyrical language and his gift for evoking place and childhood.
“At the heart of this play is a powerful examination of parent, child and love. It’s a story that looks at how we deal with the past and old wounds in our quest for peace and reconciliation.”
