Venue info

History

The Lyttelton is a proscenium theatre, conventional in its basic shape though not in the excellence of its sightlines and acoustics.

There are no eye-blocking pillars, circle rails, or other familiar hazards and you can see and hear almost equally well from each of its 890 seats. Unlike most traditional theatres, the Lyttelton has an adjustable proscenium.

You can make it into an open-end stage; add a forestage; or create an orchestra pit for up to 20 musicians. No seat is further away, here, from the actor's point of command than the distance from the front row of the dress circle in many older, larger theatres.

The stalls are on the ground floor, with the circle reached via its own lift and stairs, on the level above. There is a bar in the foyers on each floor.

The Lyttelton Theatre was named after Oliver Lyttelton, Viscount Chandos, whose parents were among the earliest effective campaigners for the National Theatre and who was himself its first chairman.

Part of The National Theatre complex. Large auditorium with raked floor and large stag Staff. Helpful and friendly. Show. Here We Are. An excellent musical play. Stand performance amongst an excellent cast for me is Tracie Bennett. Saw Inter alia with Rosamund Pike etc al. An excellent play about a female judge who has to manage work and home and the parental relationship with son and spousal relationship where she is the more successful. Rosamund Pike occupies the stage through and never falters. From the pen of Suzie Miller, without giving the ending the plan is about moral truth and legal truth. Must see.

Lyttelton Theatre is a fantastic venue — modern, comfortable, and consistently strong programming. Sightlines are excellent from most seats, the acoustics are clear, and the whole experience feels well organised from arrival to curtain call. It’s the kind of theatre where you can focus on the performance without fighting the space. The foyer areas are spacious, staff are efficient, and it’s a great part of London for making an evening of it (easy to pair with a walk along the South Bank or dinner nearby). If you’re choosing between venues, the Lyttelton is a reliably high-quality night out.

One of my fave places in one of my fave London areas. Admittedly the show itself wasn’t my favourite but the experience was brilliant. If you are coming to see something at this theatre, come early and spend the day! There is space to work with your laptop, plenty to eat, good toilet facilities, and beautiful views and lots to see outside. Staff are very friendly and helpful too. Accessibility aids are visible and easy to get hold of. The shop is great too. They have some books that I haven’t seen elsewhere and I got some honey from their very own bees!

East access via tube, train, bus, ferry. Saw Playboy of the Western World which was excellent. Plenty of restaurants and bars nearby. Easy access. Best stall seats are rows D to M, and seat numbers 8-26, but there is good visibility from all seats. Lifts to all floors. Loos get busy at peak times and it can we wise to head upstairs if you are in need of a quick pee!
