On a bare stage, one stool, clever lighting changes and very distinctive sounds, Matt Wilkinson has created a gripping psychological thriller. An actress auditions for the role of Marion Crane in a new theatre adaptation of Psycho. The director, ( Shall we say an Ivo Van Hove type), has a very specific way of working. As she works deeper with him, the lines between reality and fiction become blurred. He is found murdered.
It's a mesmerising performance by Emily Bruni, giving us her Marion Crane through the shredded body in the shower back to her story and possible outcomes. The play also demonstrates how cruel the entertainment industry is, the auditions, the silence, the dismissive attitudes, the raising of hope and the casual dashing of it. She works part-time in a boutique, knows her fashion, which becomes an essential part of the plot. Storytelling at the highest level.
The play cleverly uses music from the film, but doesn't overuse it, just enough to unnerve, in the background as the tension builds. The audience did not move throughout, it is truly gripping! A dark, ingenious play that is well worth catching.
