Mean Girls
Savoy Theatre
Tina Fey's wickedly funny musical adaptation of the cult 2004 film lands in London's West End at the Savoy Theatre. Fetch the tickets.
When Cady Heron spent her childhood being home-schooled on the African savanna, nothing prepared her for the most dangerous ecosystem she would ever encounter: an American high school. Mean Girls the Musical, now playing at the Savoy Theatre in London's West End, follows Cady as she navigates cliques, betrayal, and the intoxicating pull of popularity after falling in with the school's ruling trio, The Plastics, led by the formidable Regina George. What begins as a social experiment quickly becomes something far more complicated, and Cady must figure out who she really is before she loses herself entirely.
The book is written by Tina Fey, who also penned the original screenplay, ensuring the story retains everything that made the film a generational touchstone while expanding it into something that feels genuinely built for the stage. The result is a musical that is sharper, funnier, and more emotionally generous than you might expect.
The score, composed by Jeff Richmond with lyrics by Nell Benjamin, is one of the production's greatest strengths. The songs range from high-energy ensemble numbers to quieter, more vulnerable moments that give the characters unexpected depth. Tracks such as World Burn and Someone Gets Hurt have already earned devoted followings among musical theatre fans, and hearing them performed live in a West End house is a very different experience to any recording.
The choreography is inventive and relentless, making full use of the Savoy's stage with precision ensemble work and standout solo sequences. The set and costume design shift fluidly between locations, from the school cafeteria's rigid social geography to house parties and beyond, keeping the pace brisk across the show's two-and-a-half-hour runtime including interval.
Mean Girls the Musical carries a recommended minimum age of 12, reflecting its themes of social cruelty, teenage identity, and some sharp language. It is an excellent choice for older teenagers and adults who grew up with the film, but the musical's wit and theatricality mean it plays just as well for first-timers with no prior attachment to the source material.
Groups, birthday celebrations, and hen parties have all found a natural home here. The show has genuine emotional warmth running beneath its comedy, so do not be surprised if the laughs are occasionally interrupted by something that lands a little closer to the heart.
The Savoy Theatre sits on the Strand in central London, one of the most storied addresses in British theatrical history. The auditorium is intimate enough to feel connected to the action while being large enough to support the full spectacle the production demands. The Strand area is well served by transport links and is surrounded by restaurants and bars suitable for pre-show dining or a post-show drink. The theatre itself has a licensed bar open from before curtain up.
The cast rotates regularly in long-running West End productions, and Mean Girls is no exception. Each cast brings its own energy to these iconic roles, and many audiences find that seeing the show more than once rewards them with a noticeably fresh perspective.
Prices for Mean Girls the Musical at the Savoy Theatre are to be confirmed. The theatre has seating across stalls, dress circle, and upper levels, and different areas offer genuinely different experiences. Stalls seats place you close to the choreography and the detail of the performances, while the circle offers a broader view of the full stage picture, which suits a production as visually busy as this one.
