To Hell in a Handbag UK Tour brings a new take to The Importance Of Being Earnest
Written and performed by Helen Norton and Jonathan White and following its sell-out run at the 2017 Edinburgh Fringe Festival, To Hell in a Handbag: The Secret Lives of Canon Chasuble and Miss Prism, is about to embark on its first UK tour.
The play’s action runs in parallel to Oscar Wilde’s The Importance of Being Earnest and follows two of that play’s minor characters – a country rector and a governess – as their lives of Victorian propriety unravel in a tale of blackmail and false identity, a subversively funny new take on an Irish comedy classic.
The production received four- and five-star reviews in Edinburgh and subsequently toured all over Ireland.
Helen Norton plays Miss Prism and has recently appeared in Assassins at The Gate Theatre, Dublin. Other theatre credits include the role of Grumio in The Taming of the Shrew at Shakespeare’s Globe; Porcelain, Oedipus, The Comedy of Errors, Men to the Right, Women to the Left and Tarry Flynn (Abbey Theatre); As You Like It (Gate Theatre and Druid); Wallflowering (Tall Tales) and Misery and The Sunshine Boys (Civic Theatre).
Jonathan White plays Canon Chasuble and was born in Dublin, grew up in New York and began his acting career while still a student at Trinity College, Dublin. His theatre work includes No Escape, The Comedy of Errors, Ladybag, Calvary, The Resurrection, The Quare Fellow, Richard II and The Merchant of Venice, Othello, King Lear, Hamlet and As You Like It (Second Age).
