Shakespeare's complex and provocative play centres on a loan, a bond, and a pound of flesh. When Bassanio needs money to court the wealthy Portia, his friend Antonio borrows from the moneylender Shylock, agreeing to forfeit a pound of his own flesh if he cannot repay. The play intertwines themes of justice, mercy, prejudice, love, and the tension between the letter and spirit of the law in a story that remains fiercely relevant and hotly debated.
This production at the Ambassadors Theatre brings one of Shakespeare's most challenging plays to an intimate West End setting. The play's exploration of antisemitism, justice, and the outsider makes it perhaps more relevant now than at any point in its 400-year history. The role of Shylock is one of the great parts in the classical repertoire, and the trial scene is among the most gripping in all of Shakespeare. This is theatre that provokes thought and conversation long after the curtain falls.
The Merchant of Venice plays at the Ambassadors Theatre in the West End. The running time is approximately one hour and fifty minutes. The play deals with mature themes including antisemitism and is best suited for older teenagers and adults. The Ambassadors Theatre is located on West Street, near Leicester Square tube station.
For more Shakespeare in the West End, look for current productions at the Bridge Theatre and the Globe. For thought-provoking drama, consider The Lehman Trilogy for another exploration of outsider stories in Western culture.
