Climate-Themed Satirical Musical Tops Over 200 Submissions

Hot Mess, a sharp and satirical new musical by Ellie Coote and Jack Godfrey, has been named the winner of the prestigious 2025 Popcorn Writing Award at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe. The show, which blends pop music, comedy, and romance to tackle the climate crisis, was selected from over 200 submissions and awarded during a ceremony hosted by Miriam Margolyes at the Pleasance Courtyard.

As part of the prize, the writing team will receive a cash award and career development support from both Popcorn Group and BBC Writers, with all shortlisted finalists also gaining access to one-on-one sessions with industry professionals.

A Musical with a Message

Described as a “bold and astute comment on the way we handle this earth,” Hot Mess uses wit and emotional depth to explore urgent environmental issues through a lens of love, betrayal and resilience. The creators expressed their gratitude, noting the show took five years, several versions—and a few breakups—to complete.

“A musical about the climate crisis is not necessarily an easy sell,” said the creators. “We’re so grateful to have the platform to be part of the conversation in our own silly little way.”

Second and Third Place Honours

The second prize went to Ordinary Decent Criminal by Ed Edwards, a darkly funny and socially driven exploration of survival and justice. Third place was awarded to Abigail and Shaun Bengson for Ohio: The Bengsons, a deeply personal and uplifting musical reflecting on grief, love, and resilience.

A special mention was also given to Rodney Black: Who Cares? It’s Working by Sadie Pearson.

Celebrating New Theatrical Voices

Now in its seventh year, the Popcorn Writing Award continues to spotlight emerging talent in theatre and performance, with past winners going on to secure West End runs, TV adaptations and major industry recognition.

This year’s judging panel featured a distinguished committee including:

  • Artist and award founder Charlotte Colbert

  • Visual artist Chris Levine

  • Actor-writer Susan Wokoma

  • Comedian and author Adam Kay

  • Actor-musician Alison Sudol

  • Playwright-screenwriter Daragh Carville

  • Writer-producer Sophie Petzal

  • Producer-performer Josie Ho

The award is supported by major Fringe venues including Assembly, Pleasance, Underbelly, Gilded Balloon, Traverse and more.

With its irreverent humour and serious heart, Hot Mess embodies the spirit of the Edinburgh Fringe—unafraid to challenge, entertain, and inspire all at once.
