Royal Court’s Anatomy of a Suicide finds cast

Hattie Morahan, Paul Hilton and Kate O’Flynn are to lead the cast in Alice Birch’s new play, Anatomy of a Suicide, at the Royal Court.

Directed by Katie Mitchell, it will also feature Gershwyn Eustache Jnr, Peter Hobday, Adelle Leonce, Sarah Malin, Jodie McNee and Dickon Tyrrell. It will run at the main Jerwood Theatre Downstairs from June 3 to July 8 2017.

Alice Birch’s previous works include “Revolt. She said. Revolt again” for the Royal Shakespeare Company and New York’s Soho Rep and We Want You To Watch, a collaboration with feminist duo RashDash at the National Theatre. She also worked with Katie Mitchell on Ophelias Zimmer for the Royal Court and Schaubühne in Berlin.

Anatomy of a Suicide promises to explore the legacy and inherited suffering across three generations of women.  It is part of the Royal Court’s Jerwood New Playwrights programme, supported by Jerwood Charitable Foundation.

Set design will be by Alex Eales, costume design by Sarah Blenkinsop, lighting by James Farncombe, music by Paul Clark and sound by Melanie Wilson.

Hattie Morahan is returning to the Royal Court after appearing in The City by Martin Crimp. Familiar from many TV roles, she most recently played the lead to great acclaim in A Doll’s House at the Young Vic, transferring to London’s West End and BAM in Brooklyn.

Also a regular on TV, Paul Hilton has most recently been on stage in Peter Pan at the National Theatre, The Cherry Orchard at the Young Vic, Doctor Faustus at the Duke of York’s and Polar Bears at the Donmar Warehouse.

Kate O’Flynn will come to the production fresh from her acclaimed performance in The Glass Menagerie running at the Duke of York’s until April 29. Her other theatre credits include The Trial at the Young Vic, A Taste of Honey and Port at the National Theatre, and Lungs and The Sound of Heavy Rain for Paines Plough and Sheffield Crucible.

Jodie McNee, currently playing DC Carter in ITV drama Little Boy Blue, has appeared in An Oak Tree, Our Country’s Good and Three Winters at the National Theatre, Game at the Almeida, A Life of Galileo, Written on the Heart and Measure for Measure for the RSC, Hobson’s Choice at Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre, and The Night Watch, Hamlet, Orpheus Descending and A Taste of Honey at the Royal Exchange in Manchester.

Sarah Malin’s extensive theatre career includes The Tempest at Southwark Playhouse, Measure for Measure and The Cherry Orchard at the Young Vic, Buckets and Unrivalled Landscape at Orange Tree Theatre, Say It With Flowers at Hampstead Theatre, Here Lies Mary Spindler, The Penelopiad and Macbeth for the RSC, Marianne Dreams at the Almeida, and Iphigenia at Aulis at the National Theatre.

Dickon Tyrrell was in Harvest at the Royal Court and is a regular at the Globe Theatre where he has appeared in Twelfth Night, The Oresteia, Measure for Measure, Othello, Doctor Scroggy’s War, Julius Caesar, Henry VIII, Anne Boleyn, Hamlet, Romeo & Juliet, King Lear, The Duchess of Malfi and The Knight of the Burning Pestle. Other theatre credits include Rutherford & Son for Northern Stage, The Romans in Britain at Sheffield Crucible, Major Barbara for the Peter Hall Company and RSC productions including The Merchant of Venice, Richard III, Henry IV Parts 1 & 2, Richard II, Julius Caesar, and The Devil is an Ass.

Peter Hobday’s theatre credits include Othello at the Globe, Rudolf at West Yorkshire Playhouse, Cleansed and An Oak Tree at the National Theatre, The Boy Who Never Grew Up and The Little Gardener at the Lyric Hammersmith, and The Cherry Orchard and The Way Back Home at the Young Vic.

Gershwyn Eustache Jnr has appeared in The Royale at the Bush Theatre, The Comedy of Errors at the Globe, and Home and Nut at the National Theatre. Adelle Leonce was in Torn at the Royal Court as well as In the Night Time at the Gate and Light Shining in Buckinghamshire at the National Theatre.
