I vincitori degli Olivier Awards 2020 sono stati annunciati in una cerimonia speciale presentata da Jason Manford al London Palladium. & Juliet e Dear Evan Hansen sono stati i grandi vincitori della serata.

Gli Olivier Awards 2020 si sono tenuti ieri sera in una cerimonia speciale che è stata rimandata a causa della pandemia di COVID-19. I premi sono stati presentati da Jason Manford al London Palladium e hanno visto le esibizioni di Miriam Teak Lee, Sharon D Clarke e Sam Tutty.

I nuovi musical, & Juliet e Dear Evan Hansen, sono stati premiati con tre riconoscimenti ciascuno. Andrew Scott ha vinto il premio come Miglior Nuovo Attore per la sua interpretazione in Present Laughter all'Old Vic, commentando che l'umorismo è qualcosa che ci ha aiutato a sopravvivere negli ultimi mesi durante questo periodo davvero faticoso.

Mentre i premi hanno messo in evidenza i nuovi talenti del teatro britannico, hanno anche visto vincere due dei nostri artisti più costanti e ammirati. Il premio di Sharon D Clarke come Miglior Attrice per la sua interpretazione in Death Of A Salesman si aggiunge ai premi per precedenti vittorie come Miglior Attrice Non Protagonista nel 2014 e Miglior Attrice in un Musical nel 2019 per Caroline, Or Change. Nel suo discorso di accettazione, Sharon ha commentato: “Dobbiamo conoscere il nostro valore in questo settore e ciò che il nostro incredibile settore porta non solo alle casse ma all'anima della nostra nazione. Abbiate fede, gente. Torneremo.”

La serata ha visto Sir Matthew Bourne infrangere i record degli Olivier Awards con la sua vittoria per Mary Poppins (condivisa con Stephen Mear). Questo premio ha reso Sir Matthew l'individuo di maggior successo nella storia dei premi.

Sir Ian McKellen è stato celebrato con un premio speciale (il suo settimo Olivier) per il suo 80th Birthday Tour che lo ha visto girare teatri in tutto il Regno Unito raccogliendo fondi indispensabili per i teatri del paese.

Julian Bird, produttore esecutivo degli Olivier Awards e amministratore delegato della Society of London Theatre, ha dichiarato: “Non è così che avevamo originariamente pianificato di celebrare i straordinari candidati agli Olivier di quest'anno, ma come tanti altri ci siamo adattati a questi tempi difficili. Sono entusiasta che siamo riusciti a organizzare questo programma in modo sicuro che speriamo coinvolga e ispiri il pubblico a casa, ricordando loro il talento e la vivacità del nostro settore teatrale.”
