What is An Enemy of the People about?

Henrik Ibsen's An Enemy of the People tells the story of Dr Thomas Stockmann, who discovers that his town's profitable public baths are contaminated. When he tries to alert the community, he finds that vested interests, political cowardice, and the tyranny of the majority conspire to silence him. The play is a devastating examination of truth versus power, individual conscience versus collective self-interest, and what happens when doing the right thing makes you an outcast.

Why see An Enemy of the People?

Written in 1882, Ibsen's play feels startlingly contemporary. The themes of scientific truth being dismissed for political and economic convenience, of whistleblowers being vilified, and of democratic processes being weaponised against inconvenient facts could not be more relevant. West End productions consistently attract major actors to the role of Stockmann, and the play's central question (what do you do when telling the truth costs you everything?) makes for gripping, urgent theatre.

Practical information for visitors
