One of the most distinctive Shakespeare productions of recent years is returning to the stage. Greg Doran, former artistic director of the Royal Shakespeare Company, is reviving his acclaimed staging of Venus and Adonis for a UK tour in June 2026. The production features the incomparable Simon Russell Beale as narrator, alongside a team of world-class puppeteers and live musical accompaniment.
Originally produced in 2017 as a collaboration between the RSC and Little Angel Theatre, this inventive theatrical experience brings Shakespeare's narrative poem to vivid life through an extraordinary blend of puppetry traditions, comedy, tragedy, and some of the Bard's most sumptuous verse.
A Unique Blend of Puppetry and Poetry
Shakespeare's Venus and Adonis is not one of his plays but rather a lengthy narrative poem, first published in 1593 and dedicated to the Earl of Southampton. It tells the story of the goddess Venus and her consuming, unrequited passion for the beautiful mortal Adonis. The poem is by turns comic, erotic, tragic, and deeply moving, and it was enormously popular in Shakespeare's own lifetime.
Greg Doran's staging transforms this literary work into a theatrical spectacle by drawing on a rich variety of puppetry traditions. The production takes inspiration from the intricate artistry of Japanese Bunraku puppetry, where large, expressive figures are manipulated by visible puppeteers, as well as the elaborate visual pageantry of the Jacobean court masque. A range of techniques are employed throughout the performance, including marionette, rod, shadow, and tabletop puppetry, creating a constantly shifting visual landscape that mirrors the emotional turbulence of the poem.
At the centre of it all is Simon Russell Beale, widely regarded as one of the finest classical actors of his generation. A regular presence on the stages of the National Theatre, the RSC, and the West End, Russell Beale has won multiple Olivier Awards and is known for his intellectual depth, emotional range, and impeccable command of verse. His narration anchors the production, guiding audiences through Shakespeare's language while the puppeteers bring the mythological characters to physical life around him.
Tour Dates and Venues
The Venus and Adonis tour will visit four venues across England during June and July 2026. The confirmed dates are:
Arts Theatre Cambridge: 9 and 10 June 2026
Oxford Playhouse: 17 to 20 June 2026
The Barbican (The Pit): 23 to 27 June 2026
York Theatre Royal: 30 June and 1 July 2026
Tickets are already on sale for all venues. The London dates at The Pit, the Barbican Centre's intimate studio space, are likely to be in particularly high demand given the combination of Russell Beale's star power and the venue's relatively limited seating capacity.
The Creative Team and Cast
The touring production reunites several key members of the original creative team. The director of puppetry is Steve Tiplady, who has long been one of the UK's leading figures in the art form and was artistic director of Little Angel Theatre, the celebrated Islington-based puppet theatre that co-produced the original staging with the RSC.
The design is by Robert Jones, whose work spans opera, ballet, and theatre, while lighting design comes from Vince Herbert. The musical arrangements are by John Woolf, and the score is performed live during each performance by musician Nick Lee, adding another layer of atmosphere and emotional texture to the storytelling.
The cast of puppeteers for the tour comprises Bartolomeo Bartolini, Edie Edmundson, Rachel Leonard, Lee Maeda, and Sarah Wright, with Rachael Barber serving as stage manager. Puppetry of this calibre demands extraordinary skill, precision, and collaborative instinct, and Doran has assembled a team with deep experience in the discipline.
This new staging is supported by the Backstage Trust, the Sidney E Frank Foundation, and executive producer Mark Pigott.
Why This Production Matters
Venus and Adonis occupies a fascinating place in Shakespeare's body of work. It was actually the first piece he published, and it went through more editions during his lifetime than any of his plays. Yet it is rarely performed. The poem's length, its single-narrator format, and its lack of conventional dramatic structure mean it seldom finds its way onto a stage. Doran's production solved that problem brilliantly by using puppetry as a visual counterpart to the verse, effectively creating a theatrical experience from a non-theatrical text.
The production also demonstrates the extraordinary potential of puppetry as an art form for adult audiences. While puppet theatre in the UK is often associated with children's entertainment, traditions like Bunraku have centuries of history as sophisticated, emotionally complex performance for grown-ups. Productions like this one help to expand audience expectations of what puppetry can achieve.
For Simon Russell Beale, the tour represents an opportunity to revisit a role that sits outside the conventional repertoire. Rather than inhabiting a single character, he serves as storyteller, guiding the audience through Shakespeare's verse with the kind of nuanced, intimate delivery that has made him one of the most respected actors of his generation. It is a performance that showcases both his vocal artistry and his deep understanding of Shakespeare's language.
Should You Book?
If you are a fan of Shakespeare, innovative theatre, or simply extraordinary craft on stage, this production is well worth seeking out. The combination of Simon Russell Beale's narration, Greg Doran's inventive direction, and world-class puppetry makes for a theatrical experience unlike anything else currently touring the UK. The intimate scale of the venues on this tour means audiences will be close to the action, making the puppetry all the more magical and Russell Beale's storytelling all the more immediate.
With only four venues and limited runs at each, tickets are likely to sell quickly. The Barbican dates in particular offer London theatregoers a rare chance to see this celebrated production in one of the capital's most respected arts centres.
