CATS - THE MUSICAL PHENOMENON
Nobody ever believed that a musical about Cats would become one of the world's longest running musicals but they would soon be proved wrong as it became one of the first iconic mega-musicals of the Eighties.
Based on T. S. Eliot’s Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats, Cats The Musical received its world premiere at the New London Theatre in 1981. The show was directed by Trevor Nunn and Choreographed by Gillian Lynne with an immersive design by John Napier. With a cast including Elaine Paige, Bonnie Langford, Wayne Sleep, Paul Nicholas, Sarah Brightman and Brian Blessed the show would run for 21 record-breaking years and almost 9,000 performances becoming one of the longest-running shows in West End ever, a feat it duplicated on Broadway.
WHAT IS CATS ABOUT?
Cats is set on the night that the Jellicle Cats meet for the Jellicle Ball culminating when Old Dueteronomy selects one cat to go up to the heavyside layer. Each cat is presented until finally one cat is honoured.
THE PALLADIUM PRODUCTION
Andrew Lloyd Webber’s record-breaking musical Cats returns to the West End for a strictly limited 12 week run at the London Palladium. The production is being staged by the shows original creative team and will feature some new tweaks to the show to bring it into a modern age.
The London Palladium production of Cats will mark the West End debut of Nicole Scherzinger from The Pussycat Dolls as Grizabella who sings the hit song Memory. Nicole Scherzinger will perform as Grizabella from December 6th to February 7th only, excluding performances on the 8th, 30th, and 31st December as well as 1st January.
CATS FUN FACTS
"Memory" has been recorded by a variety of over 150 artists ranging from Barbra Streisand to Liberace. Barry Manilow's rendition was a top 40 hit in the USA.
Judi Dench was originally cast as Grizabella in the original London production but had to withdraw from the production due to injury just days before opening night. She was replaced by Elaine Paige.
In April 1999, the gross box office for the London production was over £115,363,000.
In 29 January 1996, the London production of Cats celebrated its 6.141st performance to become the longest running musical in the history of West End Theatre and on 19 June 1997 the show became the longest running musical on Broadway.
On October 1, 1991, Cats became the longest, continuously touring show in American theatre history.
