What is As You Like It about?
Shakespeare's sparkling comedy follows Rosalind, who is banished from her uncle's court and flees to the Forest of Arden disguised as a young man named Ganymede. In the forest, she encounters the lovesick Orlando, who has also fled the court, and uses her disguise to test his devotion by having him practice his wooing on "Ganymede". The play is a joyful exploration of love in all its forms, identity, and the liberating power of nature and imagination.
Why see As You Like It?
As You Like It contains some of Shakespeare's most quotable lines ("All the world's a stage"), his most delightful heroine in Rosalind, and a spirit of romantic comedy that feels timeless. The play's gender-fluid themes resonate powerfully with modern audiences, and the Forest of Arden becomes whatever each production imagines it to be. London regularly produces inventive versions that find new life in this most generous of Shakespeare's comedies.
Practical information for visitors
As You Like It is performed regularly across London's theatres, including the Globe and the National Theatre. Check current listings for venue and dates. The play is suitable for all ages, though younger children should be comfortable with a running time of approximately two and a half hours.
