Henrik Ibsen's A Doll's House is one of the most important plays ever written. Set in 19th-century Norway, it follows Nora Helmer, who appears to live the perfect bourgeois life with her husband Torvald and their children. When a secret from Nora's past threatens to surface, the foundations of her marriage and her entire identity begin to crack. The play's famous final scene, in which Nora makes a shattering decision, changed theatre forever when it premiered in 1879.
A Doll's House remains one of the most frequently performed plays in the world because its themes of gender, identity, freedom, and the gap between appearance and reality are timeless. London regularly produces outstanding versions, often with major stars in the lead roles. The play builds with extraordinary dramatic tension to one of the most powerful endings in all of drama. Whether you know the ending or not, experiencing it live is electric.
A Doll's House is performed regularly across London's theatres. Check current listings for venue and dates. The play is suitable for teenagers and adults. Running time varies by production but is typically around two hours including an interval.
For more Ibsen, An Enemy of the People and My Master Builder are both available in the West End. For plays about women challenging convention, explore what is playing at the Donmar Warehouse and the Young Vic.
Cancellation policy: theatre tickets cannot be cancelled, exchanged, or refunded once purchased.
