Now in its 6th year, Aria Entertainment have announced details of the From Page To Stage Festival of New Musical Theatre 2018. Aria Entertainment’s thriving new musical theatre festival, From Page To Stage returns for its 6th year, with submissions now open. This year’s festival will take place in September at Southwark Playhouse, and follows the hugely successful 2017 festival, which took place at The Other Palace, and received over 300 submissions from across the UK and internationally. From Page To Stage 2018 will showcase each step of how an original musical is developed, from a song-writing showcase, to full staged readings of new musicals. There will also be a showcase evening, which will feature sections of at least four different shows in development with a repertory cast. Mark Ludmon examines the year ahead for regional theatre in 2018. Bolton girl Maxine Peake has made her mark on TV and the London stage but she returns to her roots with her second play, Queens of the Coal Age. Based on the true story of four women in Lancashire during the miners’ strike in the 1980s, it will be at the Royal Exchange in Manchester from 28 June to 21 July. Also at the Royal Exchange, Maxine Peake will star in Sarah Frankcom’s new production of Beckett’s Happy Days from 25 May to 23 June. Other highlights coming up at the Royal Exchange include Julie Hesmondhalgh in Kendall Feaver’s new play The Almighty Sometimes and April De Angelis’s new adaptation of Frankenstein. Manchester’s Hope Mill Theatre is to host the European premiere of Little Women the musical. Little Women follows the adventures of the four March sisters – Jo, Meg, Beth and Amy. Jo, the eldest daughter, and an aspiring writer, receives yet another rejection from a publisher. When her friend Professor Bhaer tells Jo she can do better by making her stories more personal, she weaves the story of how she and her sisters grew up in Civil War America – a tale of self-discovery, heartache, hope and everlasting love. Little Women is based on Louisa May Alcott’s beloved classic novel and features a score by Grammy Award winner Jason Howland. The production which opens on 9 November is directed by Bronagh Lagan and choreographed by Iona Holland with design by Nik Corrall. Producers of the 50th anniversary production of Hair have announced that the show will extend its run for a further six weeks to 14 January 2018. Hair opens at The Vaults in London on 4 October 2017 following an acclaimed season at the Hope Mill Theatre in Manchester. Directed by Jonathan O’Boyle, this new production will take advantage of the Vaults immersive space.
