What is The Ruling Class about?
Peter Barnes' outrageous satirical comedy follows Jack, the 14th Earl of Gurney, who believes he is Jesus Christ. When his father dies in a bizarre accident, Jack inherits the family estate and takes his seat in the House of Lords, much to the horror of his aristocratic relatives. Their attempts to cure his delusion and control the family fortune lead to increasingly dark and absurd consequences, as the play asks whether a man who thinks he is God is really any madder than the class that rules Britain.
Why see The Ruling Class?
This is British satire at its most savage and entertaining. The play takes aim at the aristocracy, the Church, the House of Lords, and the entire British class system with a ferocity that feels completely contemporary. The central role demands an actor of extraordinary range — the character shifts between messianic gentleness and something far more dangerous — and the best productions mine both the comedy and the genuine horror of Barnes' vision.
Practical information for visitors
