Pulled
C Royale, Edinburgh Fringe
Three stars
Anarchic comedy Pulled gives us a brutally honest insight into the lives of two young Irish women looking for lads, pizza and prophylactics. Bouncing around on an inflatable pink sofa, surrounded by empty bottles of vodka and discarded clothes, Amanda and Michelle are a mess - hungover and hazy about what they got up to the night before. As they piece together what happened from texts and pictures on their phones, we get an amusing picture of a typical drunken night out on the pull, fuelled by shots and desire, as well as a friendship that will miraculously survive and thrive whatever happens.
The pair are played by Andrea Bolger and the show's writer Niamh Moroney with great charm. While the humour sometimes misfires, they have a talent for comedy that makes them a delight to watch. It pokes fun at their obsession with Twitter and other social media, the rituals of a big night out and a messy morning after, and the vital importance of a well-taken selfie.
Directed by Ita Morrissey, Pulled is a little uneven but offers plenty of broad laughs, lifted by two engaging performers. Their characters may be self-obsessed, bitchy and superficial but it is hard not to like them and enjoy an hour in their chaotic company.
Running to August 28, 2017
