Protest Play Made In Britain To Open At Red Lion Theatre

A two-hander play from Royal Court Studio Writers’ Group alumni Ella Carmen Greenhill delves into the disillusionment of today’s youth, echoing the frustration of a generation that feels it has been let down by the government and asking what they can do to make their voices heard. Directed by Jonathan O’Boyle, assistant director on The Scottsboro Boys, Made in Britain advocates the need for a new generation who exercise their right to vote.

Danny’s been told he can do anything if he follows his dreams but it’s a lie. Nina’s estranged father doesn’t recognise her. Fuelled by disillusionment with society, despair at being trapped in a poverty cycle and anger at being ignored, they end up at a G8 summit where they form an unlikely friendship. Armed with a can of petrol, some matches and some nagging doubts, the two youths must decide what it is they stand for and how they can make a difference.

Ella Carmen Greenhill is previous writer on attachment with both the Liverpool Everyman and Playhouse and Paines Plough in collaboration with Channel 4. Ella is an alumni of the Royal Court Studio Writers’ group and her play A Deafening Silence was shortlisted for the Papatango New Writing Prize. Jonathan O’Boyle directed the acclaimed West End transfer of Bash Latterday Plays by Neil LaBute and was named as one of the Guardian’s Rising Stars of 2014. He said: “It's a privilege to be working on such an important play and Ella Carmen Greenhill is a talented and brilliant young playwright. With the ever changing political landscape and the 2015 General Election around the corner, I can think of no better time to be producing this play. I believe wholeheartedly in exercising our right to vote and, with disengagement amongst young voters as a hotly discussed topic, Made in Britain examines our attitudes towards politics, protest and the very foundation of our society.
