What is War Horse about?
War Horse, based on Michael Morpurgo's novel and adapted by Nick Stafford, tells the story of Albert and his beloved horse Joey, who is sold to the cavalry at the outbreak of World War I. Albert, too young to enlist, embarks on a dangerous journey across war-torn Europe to find Joey and bring him home. The production by the National Theatre, directed by Marianne Elliott and Tom Morris, uses extraordinary life-size puppets by Handspring Puppet Company to bring the horses to vivid, breathing life on stage.
Why see War Horse?
The puppetry in War Horse is one of the most remarkable achievements in modern theatre. The life-size horse puppets, operated by three puppeteers each, move with such grace and naturalism that audiences forget they are watching puppets within minutes. The emotional connection between Albert and Joey is devastating, and the depiction of the First World War is both powerful and deeply moving. War Horse has been seen by over eight million people worldwide and won five Tony Awards including Best Play. It is theatre at its most magical.
